Regensburg |
Regensburg, the
historic cathedral city on the Danube was one of
the largest to escape wartime destruction. Its
narrow streets and intimate squares evoke its
medieval heyday, when its merchants were among
the most prosperous in Europe. Whole days could
be spent wandering Regensburg´s labyrinth of
streets and alleyways lined by venerable houses
in a style as much Italian as German. Like their
counterparts in various Italian towns, the city´s
leading families built towers in competition with
each other, of which 20 survived to give the city
its unique skyline. Among them is the
"Goldener Turm" (Golden Tower) and the
Baumburger Turm.
