King
Ludwig's II. favorite castle, the Castle Linderhof, was
built between 1870 and 1879, modelled on the Petit
Trianon at Versailles, France. Its interior has
characteristically lavish adornments, full of mirrors,
painted ceilings and gilded cherubs, in a mixture of
Renaissance and baroque styles. The surroundig gardens in
french, italian and english style include a grand
cascade. The name of the castle is derived from the
farmer family "Linder", who owned a farm at
this place. This castle was King Ludwig´s home and the only person that ever got invited there was Richard Wagner. As it turned out Richard Wagner never took up the offer to go to Linderhof. This castle is in the Bavaria town of Oberau. King Ludwig II had the castle built in the style of the palace of Versailles, because he admired Louis XIV of France. This castle contains the Kings treasures. In the entrance hall is a priceless vase which was given to King Ludwig by Napolean. In the "Hall of Mirrors" room is a priceless 1 ton crystal chandeleer. The castle stands in the beautiful grounds which contain ornate fountains. Also in the grounds is a man made cave styled like the Venus grotto. Ludwig had the cave built as a personal theater so he could listen to Wagner's music. |
